Worship for May 19, 2024

Opening Hymn: “Spirit of God” FWS 2117
Spirit of God, bright Wind breath that bids life begin,
blow as you always do, create us anew.
Give us the breath to sing, lifted on soaring wing,
Held in your hands, borne on your wings.
Alleluia — Come, Spirit come! Alleluia — Come, Spirit come!

Spirit of God, bright Dove, grant us your peace and love,
healing upon your wings for all living things.
For when we live your peace, captives will find release,
Held in your hands, borne on your wings.
Alleluia — Come, Spirit come! Alleluia — Come, Spirit come!

Spirit of God, bright Hands, even in far off lands,
You hold all the human race in one warm embrace.
No matter where we go, you hold us together so,
Held in your hands, borne on your wings.
Alleluia — Come, Spirit come! Alleluia — Come, Spirit come!

Spirit of God, bright Flame, send us in your holy name,
The power to heal, to share your love everywhere.
We cannot fail or fall, or know defeat at all,
Held in your hands, borne on your wings.
Alleluia — Come, Spirit come! Alleluia — Come, Spirit come!

Spirit of God in all, we gladly hear your call,
The life in our hands that sing, the power of your wings.
Born of your grace we rise, love shining in our eyes,
Held in your hands, borne on your wings.
Alleluia — Come, Spirit come! Alleluia — Come, Spirit come!
Alleluia — Come, Spirit come! Alleluia — Come, Spirit come!

Centering For Worship:

One: Out of death came life,
All:   And God defeated evil:
One: An empty cross and an empty tomb, a nail mark shown and a presence known.
All:   Out of sorrow came joy and God sent the Spirit.
One: Coming like fire to all people and ages, coming to birth in the water of life.
All:   Out of difference came unity, and God’s people were called:
One: Called to receive him in bread and cup, called to be free in the power of love. For when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power.
All:   We will be witnesses for Christ to the ends of the Earth. Come, Holy Spirit, come!

Gathering Prayer (in unison) Holy Spirit, River of Love, Divine Delight, flow through us.
Flame of Sun, burn in us. Wind of Heaven, breathe in us. Tongues of Strangers, speak in us. Love of God, sing in us. Lead us beyond ourselves, to return to you in the other, to love you in our stranger, our foreigner, our enemy. Burn with your fire in us, that it may be ours.

Breathe yourself into our lives, that they may be yours. We are your song, and your singing. We are your candle; you are our flame. Holy Spirit, love the world in us as we follow in the footsteps of Jesus, who taught us to pray … Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Doxology
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise God all creatures here below. Alleluia, alleluia.
Praise God for all that Love has done: Creator, Christ, and Spirit – One.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Prayer of Dedication:  O Faithful One, accept these gifts of our hearts and hands. May they be multiplied
and magnified as the living presence of Christ in the world. Amen.

Hymn: “Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness” FWS 2129
Refrain: Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free;
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, Wind, Wind on the sea.

You moved on the waters, you called to the deep, then you coaxed up the mountains
from the valleys of sleep; and over the eons you called to each thing:
wake from your slumbers and rise on your wings. Refrain.

You swept through the desert, you stung with the sand, and you goaded your people
with a law and a land; and when they were blinded with their idols and lies,
then you spoke through your prophets to open their eyes. Refrain.

You sang in a stable, you cried from a hill, then you whispered in silence
when the whole world was still; and down in the city you called once again,
when you blew through your people on the rush of the wind. Refrain.

You call from tomorrow, you break ancient schemes, from the bondage of sorrow
the captives dream dreams, our women see visions, our men clear their eyes,
with bold new decisions — your people arise. Refrain.

Sermon and Reflection: Rev. Beth Gedert – Acts 2 & Galatians 3
We root our teachings in ancient insights from the Bible. We listen with our minds and respond with our hearts to what the Scripture means in today’s world. Affirmation of faith from South Africa.

One: It is not true that this world and its inhabitants are doomed to die and be lost.

All: This is true: for God so loved the world that God gave God’s only child so that
everyone who believes in him shall not die, but have everlasting life.

One: It is not true that we must accept inhumanity and discrimination, hunger,
and poverty, death and destruction.

All: This is true: Christ has come that all may have life, and have it abundantly.

One: It is not true that violence and hatred shall have the last word and that war and
destruction have come to stay forever.

All: This is true: for to us a child is born, to us a son is given, in whom authority
will rest, and whose name will be Prince of Peace.

One: It is not true that we are simply victims of the powers of evil that seek to rule
the world.

All: This is true: to Christ is given authority in heaven and earth, and Christ is
with us always, to the end of the world.

One: It is not true that we have to wait for those who are specially gifted, who are
the prophets of the church, before we can do anything.

All: This is true: God has poured out the Spirit on all people.
Our sons and daughters shall prophesy. Our young people shall see visions.
Our old folk shall dream dreams.

One: It is not true that our dreams of liberation for humankind, our dreams of justice,
human dignity, and peace, are not meant for this earth and its history.

All: This is true: the hour comes, and it is now, that true worshippers shall
worship God in spirit and in truth. Alleluia! Come, Spirit, come!

Closing Hymn: “We Are Called” FWS 2172
Come, live in the light! Shine with the joy and love of the Lord!
We are called, to be light for the kingdom, to live in the freedom of city of God!
We are called, to act with justice, we are called to live tenderly,
We are called to serve one another, to walk humbly with God.

Come, open your heart! Show your mercy to all those in fear!
We are called to be hope for the hopeless so all hatred and blindness will be no more!
We are called, to act with justice, we are called to live tenderly,
We are called to serve one another, to walk humbly with God.

Sing! Sing a new song! Sing of that great day when all will be one!
God will reign, and we’ll walk with each other as sisters and brothers united in love!
We are called, to act with justice, we are called to live tenderly,
We are called to serve one another, to walk humbly with God.
